Shade Tree Commission

The Borough of Wallington Shade Tree Commission is a pivotal municipal entity devoted to the management, preservation, and enhancement of our local tree canopy. Our commission takes on the responsibility of overseeing the strategic planting, meticulous maintenance, and, when necessary, the removal of trees in public spaces throughout the borough. We are committed to promoting the manifold benefits of a flourishing urban tree cover, including environmental sustainability, aesthetic appeal, and community well-being.

Why Are Shade Trees Important?

Shade trees play a multifaceted role in enhancing the well-being of our community. Their importance is underscored by a range of benefits that positively impact both the environment and residents:

  • Increase Property Values: Trees contribute to a 5-20% value difference between landscaped and non-landscaped homes, leading to increased property values.
  • Improve Air Quality: Leaves filter the air by removing dust and particulates, while also absorbing pollutants like carbon dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide.
  • Create a Habitat for Wildlife: Trees attract birds and provide a habitat for various wildlife species, promoting biodiversity in the urban environment.
  • Curb Noise: Trees serve as effective noise barriers, creating a more tranquil and peaceful atmosphere in residential areas.
  • Keep Temperatures Cooler: The net cooling effect of a healthy tree is equivalent to 10 room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day, contributing to cooler temperatures in the vicinity.
  • Control Soil Erosion: Trees help prevent soil erosion, maintaining the stability of the soil and preventing sediment runoff.
  • Maintain a Calming Environment: The presence of trees contributes to a calming and aesthetically pleasing environment, positively impacting mental well-being.
  • Beautify Our Town: Beyond their functional benefits, trees enhance the visual appeal of our town, contributing to its overall beauty.

Additionally, the economic advantages of trees include lowered energy costs for homeowners, reduced air conditioning and heating expenses, and enhanced property values. Trees play a crucial role in moderating the climate, conserving water, and reducing the risk of flooding. Their ability to absorb radiant heat from the sun and reduce ambient temperatures through an evaporative cooling process further emphasizes their indispensable role in creating a sustainable and pleasant living environment.
